About Mumbo

Mumbo is built by one person. No company, no team — I'm a developer from Slovenia.

I started it for my grandfather. He spoke Italian when he was young and wanted to pick it up again, but language apps were never an option for him, because none of them speak Slovenian. What he needed was simple: say something in Slovenian, hear it in Italian, then repeat the Italian out loud until it sticks. So that's what I built him. The app says the phrase, listens to him say it, and shows him which words came out right.

That's also why Mumbo covers languages most apps skip: 60 languages in every direction, over 3,500 pairs, most of them not available anywhere else.

Then I realized it is exactly what you need before a trip. So today Mumbo is a travel phrasebook: the phrases a trip needs across nine everyday situations, from a first hello to a full sentence, each drilled until you can say it yourself. Say something of your own in your language and it teaches you that too. And when they answer with something you didn't prepare for, Talk translates the conversation live, in both directions.

Your voice is never recorded or stored — only the text of the phrases you save, so they're there next time. The app is there to help you speak, not to record you.
